What Size Cake Topper Do I Need?

See how a 5.5-inch topper compares with 6, 8 and 10-inch cakes, check the usable space and try a simple paper width guide before ordering.

Start with the width of the cake’s usable top surface, then compare it with the width listed on the topper’s product page. Many Edition Works designs are approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) wide, but some differ: our Winter ONEderland design is approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm). Check the individual design before ordering.

How does a 5.5-inch topper look on different cakes?

The same topper will look much more prominent on a small cake than a wide one. These examples compare the full cake diameter with a 5.5-inch topper; piping, flowers and other decorations can reduce the space available.

Width comparison: one topper, three cake sizes

6-inch cake (15.2 cm)

8-inch cake (20.3 cm)

10-inch cake (25.4 cm)

Dark bar = 5.5-inch topper width. Pale bar = cake diameter. Widths are proportional; height and shape are not shown. This illustration is not a printable measuring template.

  • On a 6-inch cake: a 5.5-inch topper is almost as wide as the cake. It can make a strong focal point, but check the room left by piping or flowers.
  • On an 8-inch cake: it spans roughly two-thirds of the diameter, leaving more room for surrounding decoration.
  • On a 10-inch cake: it spans just over half the diameter. Keep nearby decorations lower so the wording remains easy to see.

Measure the tier where the topper will sit

For a tiered cake, use the diameter of the top tier rather than the widest tier below it. Measure the iced cake’s usable flat surface, allowing for a piped border, raised decorations and candles. A tall, narrow cake can still have a small top surface.

Try a paper width guide before ordering

  1. Read the width stated on your chosen product page.
  2. Cut a strip of paper to that width. For a listed 5.5-inch topper, use approximately 14 cm.
  3. Hold the strip above the cake or cake tin in the intended position.
  4. Check the view from the front as well as from above, allowing space around any decorations.

This checks width, not the exact outline. Topper height varies with the design and wording, so use the product images to judge whether the design is tall, compact or wide. If a precise height is important, ask us before ordering.

Choose the outline as well as the size

A number cake topper creates a clear focal point, while our personalised birthday topper for any age combines the age with decorative wording. For a child turning one, the personalised first-birthday name topper adds their name to “is one”. Compare the complete outline, rather than assuming designs with the same width will look identical.

Need a different width?

Use our custom orders page before purchasing. Tell us the design, desired width, cake diameter and celebration date so we can confirm what is possible, the cost and timing. A checkout note alone does not confirm a size change.

Position and assemble your topper

Our card toppers are supplied unmounted with bamboo sticks and glue dots. Assemble securely before use; only the bamboo sticks should enter the cake. Keep the decorative card and adhesive away from direct food contact, remove the topper before serving and keep it clear of candles and flames.
