How to Choose the Perfect Personalised Cake Topper
Work through wording, size, finish and colour in six simple steps, with customer cake examples and links to the right personalised designs.
Choose the wording first, check the size, then pick a finish and colour that keep the design readable. A personalised topper can bring a simple cake together without needing lots of extra decoration. Use this guide to work through the decisions in the order you’ll make them.
1. Choose the message that matters
For a birthday, decide whether you want an age, a name or both. Our personalised birthday topper for any age lets you choose the age and add an optional name. For a child turning one, the first-birthday name topper combines their name with “is one”.
Check the individual product instructions: some designs are personalised, while others have fixed wording. For example, the On Cloud 9 topper celebrates a ninth birthday without needing a name. Write names and numbers exactly as you want them to appear, and check spelling before adding the item to your basket.
2. Check the usable space on the cake
Measure the top tier where the topper will sit, allowing for piping, flowers and candles. Many of our designs are approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) wide, but individual products can differ. Check the listing rather than judging size from a photograph.
Cut a paper strip to the listed width and hold it above the cake or cake tin. This helps you see the balance from the front; it does not reproduce the exact height or shape. Our cake topper size guide shows how the same width compares with 6, 8 and 10-inch cakes.
3. Choose glitter or mirror card
Glitter card adds textured sparkle. Mirror card has a smooth, reflective surface. Neither is reserved for a particular occasion: choose the effect you like and consider how it will look in photographs.
Compare the same design in both finishes in our glitter versus mirror guide, or browse glitter card toppers and mirror card toppers.
4. Match a colour, then check the contrast
Choose one colour from the cake, balloons or table decorations. Then check whether the lettering will stand out against the icing and the background behind the cake.
- Neutral cake: gold or rose gold can add a warm accent.
- Blue cake: gold, silver or a dark lettering colour can create contrast.
- Pink or floral cake: repeat a flower colour, or use a metallic accent.
- Bright rainbow cake: pick one existing colour instead of adding several competing accents.

Use customer cakes as styling ideas rather than assuming the exact design is available as a standard product. Browse custom name toppers, or ask about a particular design before ordering. Screens and lighting can change how colours appear.
5. Plan assembly and placement
Our card toppers are supplied unmounted with bamboo sticks and glue dots, so you can choose the support position and display height. Assemble securely before use. Only the bamboo sticks should enter the cake; keep the card and adhesive away from direct food contact.
Remove the topper before serving, keep it clear of candles and flames, and store it flat and dry. It is a decoration, not a toy. For a cake smash, remove the topper and supports before the child reaches the cake.
6. Check the details before paying
- Confirm the name, age and any other wording.
- Check whether personalisation is required, optional or unavailable for the design.
- Review the listed width and available colour options.
- Read the delivery information and check the delivery options offered at checkout.
- For different wording, sizing or a new design, contact us before purchasing so we can confirm what is possible, cost and timing.
